A Home from Home - On Madeira

Joe with Canadian American singer Paul Anka

We offer a relaxing stay

Madeira is noted for its wine, gastronomy, historical and cultural value, embroidery artisans, its flora, fauna, and landscapes (Laurel forest) which are classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Madeira’s annual New Year celebrations feature the largest fireworks show in the world, as officially recognized by Guinness World Records in 2006.  Joe’s Villa will open it’s doors to guests in August 2017.

Madeira island

Madeira is a Portuguese archipelago that could be found in the north Atlantic Ocean, west and slightly south of Portugal. Its total population was estimated in 2011 at 267,785. The capital of Madeira is Funchal on the main island’s south coast. Today, it is a popular year-round resort, being visited every year by about one million tourists.

Your Host Joe Gomes

Joe Gomes was born in Madeira and then moved with his parents to Toronto, Canada where he grew up.

His professional life began in Park Plaza Hotel in Toronto where he quickly attained the position of barman where he presided in the rooftop lounge. The hotel was subsequently aquired by the Hyatt group and renamed 'Park Hyatt Hotel'.

During Joe's 57 year career in the hotel he met many celebrities such as Pierce Brosnan, Christopher Plummer, Burt Reynolds and Russell Crowe.
Legendary singer Paul Anka came specifically to meet Joe. The two chatted at the bar until 4:30 a.m.

Joe's most memorable celebrity sighting was The Duke himself. Legendary western actor John Wayne was doing a press junket with co-star Elsa Martinelli and some of the wild animals for the 1962 movie Hatari!

Joe retired from the Hotel in 2016 and returned to Madeira Island to follow his dream of opening a luxury Bed & Breakfast.

Come and meet Joe and discover the beautiful sub-tropical island of Madeira.
